Just watched Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight. Absolutely superb. I was skeptical since I adored La La Land, but I see now that this wasn’t another case of a movie with important subject matter beating out the artistic masterpiece of the year (e.g. last year’s Spotlight, which tells a profound and necessary story, but isn’t nearly as elegant as Mad Max, The Revenant, or The Big Short, all of which were nominated alongside it). It’s artistic and poetic in its own unique, groundbreaking way. The cherry on top was that it is the first Best Picture winner to feature a gay protagonist.
